Steven Vandora – The Winning Landscape Approach
Steven Vandora is the award-winning contractor and landscape designer who has been quietly remodeling and planting Southern California and beyond for over a quarter century. He’s one of those under-the-radar guys who has a client list that includes most of those famous one-word names we all know, as well as the heads of the Conglomerate companies that use those names.
Born and raised in Savannah, the first planned city in America or as John Berendt, author of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” says “Savannah is the most home-conscious city in America.” Steven developed an innate sense of place, ownership and proportion in relation to the people in and using gardens, both public and private.
Beginning his early career in Savannah as an assistant film set designer, he was quickly snapped up by a production company that recognized talent when they saw it.
He then started a small indoor plant maintenance business in 1982 at the behest of Marty Baum, a legendary man also known for spotting talent. Soon after realizing that there were only 32 plants growing indoors, it was time to expand her palette and start working the soil, and she subsequently enrolled in the Landscape Architecture program at UCLA. Here he traveled abroad and experienced an epiphany at Blenheim Palace in England and especially at Vaux Le Vicomte in France, of what man was capable of creating. The harmonies of light, smell, sound, color, texture and life, basically, could be enriched and given to noble inspirations, whether in a palace in Europe or a small balcony in Beverly Hills.
Steven Vandora says: In France in the 17th century, with chaos reigning outside the palace walls, you have Descartes and the age of reason and you see the need for order that Le Notre expressed using the science of mathematics that it is reflected in the well-ordered and trimmed rhythm. flower beds in Vaux, then in the 18th century you have: “the best ever called” Capability Brown, who said no, let’s not talk about that, let’s talk about nature and he uprooted all the flower beds and took out a lake and a lawn with sheep wandering right. towards the front door and said, this is what we are.
Combining these two schools of thought for more than 25 years, winning walls of awards, saying no to offers of television fame, he has been replanting and carrying out his vision and that of his very select clients in the great estates and a few world-class hotels. as well as unique properties throughout the Southern California terrain.
