Three Secrets To Helping Your Child With Primary Math At Home

You’ll find these three tips in any good teacher’s secret arsenal. And they probably use them without even knowing it!

1. Sequence your information correctly.

The first thing to remember when helping your child with elementary math is that you are probably taking a lot of knowledge about a given subject for granted. Many parents simply start in the wrong place when it comes to building their child’s math skills, which quickly leads to frustration on the part of both the child and the adult.

It’s important to remove any assumed knowledge you already have in a certain area, and given that much of the elementary math content will seem fairly straightforward to most adults, this means starting completely from scratch… especially when it comes to ‘young students from four to six years.

The easiest way to do this is to check your school’s “scope and sequence” for the particular content area you’re helping with, or check your state education authority’s curriculum handbook or territory

This document sets out exactly what primary school students should learn about the subject, when they should learn it and in what order each component will be introduced.

You’ll probably be surprised how simple each step is once you break the topic down into bite-sized pieces!

2. Use relevance.

The second thing you need to do is use relevance to help your child with elementary math.

This means relating the subject to their world in real terms.

It’s easy to focus on the theory of the math concept you’re helping your child with; after all, that’s what gets stuck in your brain for later use. But the fact is, they’re unlikely to remember it unless they can personally identify with the concept.

So, if you’re looking at groups of numbers, instead of drawing pictures or counting on paper, use real objects like little Lego men or pieces of fruit to demonstrate the idea. Have your child move and match the objects.

If you’re demonstrating fractions, split an actual pizza or pie to model the different parts of a whole (note that using “whole” squares can save you trouble here).

Or, to explore graphs and data, physically map family members’ favorite ice cream flavors and create a graph of the results together.

Once you have linked math concepts to your child’s real world, you can return to the theory of the subject using traditional pencil and paper methods. But if you provide some relevance and authenticity first, you’ll be surprised how quickly they notice… and may even enjoy it!

3. Use manipulatives.

Remember that children learn by doing, so just as you linked theories to their personal experience in the previous step, make sure you allow your child to explore a concept with a practical example.

This could be using a clock face with moving hands when exploring the concept of time, for example. Or it could be using Diene blocks or an abacus to consolidate their knowledge of place value.

The important thing is to make sure your child gets a chance to get their hands dirty and physically handle some learning resources or objects when looking at a new math topic.

Likewise, try to find as many opportunities to apply your new knowledge in your day-to-day life as possible… whether it’s suggesting how to cut a cake for dinner so that everyone gets an equal serving, or calculating how much time is left until a certain event, such as school leaving or your favorite TV show.

By “doing” the work themselves and applying their new knowledge to real contexts, your child will be on their way to a more confident number understanding.
