Our world, and even more so our country, India, is full of engineers and doctors of all kinds. And in this scenario, an aviation course like aircraft maintenance course might seem like an exciting option.

Aircraft maintenance engineering sure looks like just another branch of engineering, but fortunately, it’s not.

Now that we have an exciting and prestigious career option ahead of us, let’s see what exactly it entails.

First of all, it is quite important to understand that an aircraft maintenance engineer is not an aircraft engineer. The latter is a branch of engineering commonly called aerospace engineering and is a 4-year undergraduate course. The AME, on the other hand, is a 3-year course, at the end of which you don’t get a degree but a license.

An aircraft maintenance engineer assists in maintaining, repairing, rebuilding and servicing aircraft at a technical level. A day-to-day part of an Ames job is to conduct aircraft overhaul programs and assess the condition of aircraft and their engines. Only a maintenance engineer can certify whether an aircraft is airworthy or not. Without the permission and certification of an AME, take-off of an aircraft is not permitted.

Now let’s go to the eligibility and requirements:

• A 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is a prerequisite for the entrance exam, with at least 50% in aggregate.

• Diploma in any branch of engineering.

• An undergraduate degree with a 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

To start a career as an aircraft maintenance engineer, you need to obtain an AME license, which requires you to appear in a certification exam conducted by the Aeronautical Society of India. However, to clarify, you need to enroll in a DGCA approved aircraft maintenance training institute, because only they can impart the required knowledge and experience.

The AME exam consists of 2 parts, which are written exams and an oral-practical exam.

The written exam consists of 4 papers. These are:

• Rules and regulations

• General Engineering and Workshop Practices

• General cells, engines and systems

• Specific cell/engine/system as desired by the candidate

The oral-practical test requires candidates to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in aircraft maintenance. This test involves an industry expert and requires a minimum pass percentage of 70%.
