The same is true when you’re getting ready to set up housekeeping for your soon-to-be discus fish. A proper discus tank is essential to the success of your new fish community.

Some fish will suffice in almost any aquarium or tank, but this is not the case with the discus. They are some of the queens of the fish world. They demand “high class” or trouble will ensue. They can even “consult” you if the conditions are not right. Do you know what I mean?

Your first decision is how many inhabitants will reside in this disk tank? This is a very important factor when figuring out how big your fish house should be. The guideline is that you will need about 10 gallons per disk.

Here’s a little added tip: six discs is a big number to start with. Somehow this works very well, much better than 3, 4 or 5.

Glass is also difficult to pierce. It’s not impossible, but if you need a hole for your filter setup, this could be a problem.

Acrylic has some important advantages.

The first advantage of acrylic is flexibility in design. You can have your tank almost any shape you can imagine.

Acrylic is also safer than glass (and lighter too). It doesn’t break, which is an important consideration if your 5-year-old will be practicing t-ball around the fish tank.

The main disadvantage of acrylic is the price. It’s much more than glass, especially if you’re looking for a unique design.

Tip: Avoid plastic if possible. The plastic will cloud over time.
