Learn Your Math! – Don’t Be Stupid Human

I will never forget my high school math teacher, he taught math my sophomore, sophomore, sophomore year, which includes Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus, etc. At first, I was mostly bored in his classes, because at the beginning of the year it seemed like it was just a refresher course for what I had already learned. And because I was bored, and a Smart Alec, I made jokes, and I guess I got away with it because I was at the top of the class. But my math teacher knew how to shut me up quickly; he started writing things on the board that looked like hieroglyphs.

And then I’d say “Okay Mr. Smarty-Pants, what’s the answer?” And sometimes he could follow me and I’d get lucky and have the right answer, but mostly he was playing with math that was beyond my time, and he was totally challenging me. Then after taking my seat he would refer to me for the rest of the class as; “sleepy old men around here, yada, yada” but we always got along, because he was also the adult advisor for our HS chess club.

I was talking to a retired high school math teacher the other day, and he reminded me of the good old days, and something I often imagined Richard A. Muller saying. If you don’t know Muller, he’s the Berkeley professor who teaches the class “Physics for Future Presidents: The Science Behind the Headlines,” which is also the title of his best-selling book. I don’t know why I imagine Richard A. Muller PhD. saying that, but I just do it, I hear him in my thoughts saying;

“Don’t be a stupid human, learn your math!”

And as you know, we need to challenge our kids in high school, but we also need to make math fun and interesting, because if we lose interest, they won’t learn anything, they won’t enjoy the subject, and therefore I won’t try and I won’t care. One of the best things I think a math teacher can do is when they are teaching they should give examples of what happens if you screw up the equation or get the wrong answer to a word problem.

At the end of the day, most math teachers, especially when starting to improve math to new students, need to keep it interesting by using real examples of problems to solve. Maybe what we should do is show what would happen if the kids get the wrong answer. In other words, a passenger train crashes into a freight train, a car misses the turn, or your bubble bath floods your apartment and your neighbors below you. Because that makes math real, and it makes it really important, but most of all, it makes it fun.

It is up to teachers and professors to demonstrate why mathematics is so important and what happens when humans do not learn mathematics. You know all the stupid things humans do because they don’t study their math or they don’t have a wrong answer. In fact, I hope you take all of this into consideration and think about it.
