Long Island Schools Rate Well On Math Test
Long Island schools show remarkable improvements on statewide math tests for grades three through eight. Albany education officials announced the dramatic improvements this month. According to Newsday, Education Commissioner Richard Mills said: “The fact that children are achieving higher standards in the middle grades is particularly significant.” Schools on Long Island, and many across the country, have faced the challenge of declining test scores during the middle school years.
In their second year of reporting steady improvements, Long Island schools have moved up in every grade and are showing impressive results. 85.2% of third year students passed, compared to 80.5% last year. And seventh graders increased scores from 55.6% to 66.4%. While not all Long Island School District residents support the mandatory tests, these results are still welcome. New York State has the second-highest per-pupil spending of the 50 states, and often shows the results in impressive scores. Still, New York City districts, like Long Island schools, have felt pressure to meet the No Child Left Behind mandate to get all children to a proficient rating by 2014.
Congressman Steve Israel is pushing for funding for the Keeping Our Promise to America’s Children Act to help fund the efforts. Supporting NCLB is costly for Long Island schools because of lower teacher-student ratios that require more teachers and classrooms, time-consuming but government-mandated procedures, and the requirement for highly qualified math teachers and sciences Although most educators in Long Island schools support these actions, finding the methods to make them happen has been a challenge. Fortunately, with funding of over $11,000 per student across New York State, Long Island schools are more successful than most schools across the country.
Of course, that’s not always how Long Island school board members and educators feel. Some Long Island school districts had heated budget debates in January over budget cuts and funding allocations. A major area of concern in Long Island schools is early intervention and remedial programs. Because of the successes of the third-grade after-school homework program in reducing the need for special education classes, educators in Long Island schools are hoping for funding for similar projects. Early childhood programs are also in high demand, but did not receive desired funding earlier this year. Early childhood education classes are credited with helping low-income students better prepare for the transition to kindergarten and elementary school. Still, with massive increases in math scores over the past two years, Long Island schools are showing results that the rest of the country is still chasing.
