College of Southern Idaho – Applied Science Degree in Horse Management
The College of Southern Idaho is located in Twin Falls Idaho and is a two-year public college that offers associate degrees in many different degree programs. One of the programs offered by this university is an associate degree in applied science in horse management. This program is designed to prepare students to work in many different aspects of the equine industry and will also prepare students to be able to manage their own horses.
Students must complete several core classes including:
· Fundamentals of Oral Communication
· English composition 1
· General Mathematics Courses
· General Courses in Social Sciences
Students will also take a series of more specific classes to develop their knowledge and skills in the equine industry. Some of the classes that students will have to complete are:
· Equine Nutrition – This course is designed to teach students the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system of the horse and to classify the functions of nutrients and relate them to digestion, absorption and metabolism in relation to growth, work and reproduction.
· Equine Reproduction – Students will study the reproductive physiology of horses including hormonal control, reproductive diseases, reproductive failure, artificial insemination and embryo transfer.
· Horse Evaluation: Students will be required to evaluate some of the most common breeds of horses based on conformation and performance. Students will have to explain to the teachers the reasons for their evaluations.
· Horse Anatomy and Inadequacy: Students will be required to identify common weaknesses in horses along with their location, cause and possible treatment options.
· Draft Horses: Students will study today’s common draft breeds, their history, conformation, harnessing and hitching principles, and management of draft horses. The course also includes sample procedures, husbandry, breeding and training. This course also has a mandatory laboratory that consists of handling, harnessing, hitching, driving, packing, and the care and management of draft horses.
· Riding – This course is designed to teach natural horsemanship to students of any skill level and riding discipline. Students will learn how to communicate effectively with horses and become their natural partner and leader. During this course, students will learn the proper way to safely handle, ride, mount, and mount a horse.
· Business Aspects of Horse Breeding – This course is designed to teach students the business fundamentals related to horse breeding. Some of the ideas and theories taught in this class include production, marketing, accounting, finance, and law and ethics.
· Riding: There are three levels of riding lessons that a student can choose from based on their previous riding experiences and current skill level. The beginning riding class will teach students natural horsemanship along with how to ride, mount, riding skills and how to communicate with the horse. There is also an intermediate riding class that is designed to teach advanced natural riding skills to students who have already completed the beginning riding class. An advanced riding class is also available for experienced western riding students. This class gives students very advanced training skills to help them train better horses. Students must have their own horse for this class.
· English Riding: This class is designed to teach students with no prior riding experience the fundamentals of English riding. The student will have hands-on experiences in fixing, mounting, bridging and riding. For more advanced riders, intermediate English riding is also offered. This class is for students who already have a basic knowledge of English riding. This class will put a lot of emphasis on riding positions, balance, control and the figure eight trot. There is also an advanced course that emphasizes riding in a show ring.
This is just a short list of the different classes offered to students who want to pursue a degree in an equine-related field.
