What is supersaturation?

A definition:

First imagine you are creating a solution by dissolving some material in a solvent, “the term supersaturation refers to a solution that contains more dissolved material than could be dissolved by the solvent under normal circumstances” this definition is from en.wikipedia. org

Supersaturation is usually achieved by heating an already saturated solution allowing more material to dissolve and then allowing the solution to cool. The resulting solution is supersaturated.

These supersaturated solutions are very unstable; any boost will cause them to recrystallize because, as supersaturation implies, they contain more solute than can normally be dissolved. An explanation from www.math.mtu.edu

Simply put, the supersaturated solution will crystallize very quickly from the moment a “seed crystal” is created. Sometimes the seed crystal can be created just by shaking the solution or even by scratching the container!
