Education Needs a Makeover

In Prince Ea’s great poem, “I just sued the education system!!!” says: “… here is a classroom today and here is a classroom we used 150 years ago. Now it is not a shame. In literally more than a century, nothing has changed. However, say prepare students for the future? But with tests like this I have to ask: Are you preparing students for the future or the past?”

If you’ve stepped into a public school classroom in the last…well, 100 years, then you know how dire the situation is. But let’s go a little further. If you’ve walked into a Title I school in the last ten years, you might quickly understand why we have thousands and thousands of teachers across the country on the streets demanding better.

I’m going to leave teacher pay and school funds and budgets out of this and just focus on our education system itself, the structure of it. Schooling in America today is pathetic compared to the immense advancements and upgrades we have made in science and technology.

How is it possible that today, in 2018, we can have an entire computer in our pocket, with access to all the information ever published on the World Wide Web, not to mention enough space for over 5,000 images and the ability to have a chat face to face with someone on the other side of the world? And WONDERFULLY our classrooms (especially those in low-income areas) still use whiteboards, with over thirty students in a classroom, sitting at desks that are falling apart, always without pencils. Who needs a pencil nowadays?

As a public school teacher, I can say that I have felt very discouraged by the education system and structure. It was so clearly created to keep minorities down, and despite all the innovative ideas and new types of alternative schools opening up (in wealthy areas, of course), these schools just keep the cycle of the pipeline a the prison. As Prince Ea comments in his poem, we are not preparing our youth for a successful future.

For example, here are some of the top skills employers are looking for today (Careers NZ) along with explanations of how we are not helping our students develop these skills.

The top 5 skills employers are looking for:

Communication- We require students to raise their hand to speak, speak only when asked, and only answer specific questions posed by the teacher. Students rarely have the opportunity to have open conversations with their peers where they must professionally express their opinions, allow others to speak, and find an appropriate time to respond and respectfully disagree. This means that our students are basically never given their own voice.

Teamwork: Yes, students still occasionally work on group projects, perhaps creating a poster or PowerPoint presentation. However, there is no room in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for discovering your own personality type, learning to work with different personality types, learning to brainstorm together, collaborating and leveraging strengths of each team member. In case you were wondering, we still give old-school tests, end-of-chapter tests, standardized state tests, all of which students can’t measure up to their classmate’s work. What we consider “cheating” is what we then demand of them: the ability to work well with others!

Self Management: Whether or not you choose to believe the claims that the education system was created and implemented specifically to brainwash our youth into thinking and behaving in a way that would benefit us (specifically the young men in Germany today for become obedient soldiers) , today anyone can walk into a school and see that everything is black and white, set in stone, strictly structured and the students are very micromanaged. Assigned seats, bells (even minute bells!), waiting line, etc. Students are not taught how to manage their time, make decisions about how they complete tasks, or even choose which environment they work best in.

Thinking Skills: Teachers, and adults in general, are constantly stepping in to solve problems for children from birth to eighteen, and suddenly they’re adults and we just expect them to know how to figure things out. Whether it’s conflict resolution or how to get along with classmates, how to find a solution to a math problem, how to do two homeworks on time, how to coordinate your schedule with your classmates to finish a group project … we do it all. this stuff for students! Or their parents call and excuse them from solving their own problems (which shows that the school isn’t the only one to blame for this). It’s okay for our kids to have problems, it’s okay for our kids to be stressed, it’s okay for our kids to fail. It’s how they solve these problems that matters, and that’s why we have to teach them how to think and solve problems early on.

Resilience: Speaking of failure, where in the CCSS curriculum does it include how to bounce back from failure? How much of the CCSS curriculum includes how to overcome personal obstacles to succeed and create a better future? If you are over twenty years old and have had at least one job interview in your life, you probably have to give an example of when you got it wrong or failed at something and how you recovered. But when do we teach it?

In a world where the iPhone is updated every six months (or less), where we can order our coffee from our phones before walking into the coffee shop, where we can basically collaborate and create a project with five strangers in five different countries, absolutely necessary to update and update our education system. We have to think more in the long term. Students should not be memorizing maps, or practicing alliteration, or reciting Shakespeare, unless it is directly related to their life and skills that will help them have a better future. Let’s face it, almost every fact is easily accessible on Google. Even maps are accessible on Google (including virtual tours of places like the Taj Mahal and the Amazon rainforest)! What our students need to learn, practice and master are the soft skills that their future employers will demand of them.
